Cold Sky ~ part II ~

“Waaah!!! So cold! Why do we have school in winter?” I thought aloud. Immediately N.G.(our live-newspaper – he knew everything) continued this chain of thoughts:
“Yeah. I wonder why? I heard that M. High I taking a break this week. Why don’t we also do it?[…]” But I didn’t hear what he said… I was resting my head on my left arm and was watching through the window.  “Hmmm… This time the sky isn’t beautiful at all… a grey cold distant sky…”
“Attention class!” said Mr. Payton, our class master, and we all stood up respectfully. “Be seated. Before taking attendance I would like to present to you a new classmate. Mr. Hesse, please come in!”
The name was quite unusual so it caught my attention: a tall teenager entered the classroom. I think he was taller than me, with a pale complexion. The first thing that struck me was his hair. It was obvious that his natural colour was bright blonde, but he also had some black stripes which seemed dyed.  Another feature that caught my attention was his eyes: even though I was in the farthest seat from the door I was able to see those watery-sky-blue eyes. They were enchanting… I couldn’t look elsewhere. He started looking around to familiarize with the faces around him. His expression showed uncertainty, even though he was smiling wide, and when his eyes met mine I was able to see it – sadness… pain… His almost feminine beautiful face was smiling, but his eyes – sorrowing.
“My name is Roi von Hesse.I’m fifteen and I came from Norway. Please take care of me!”
“Then, Mr. Hesse, please sit there, next to the class pres. He will guide you until you accommodate. Is that alright, Mr. Hawking? “
“Ha? Ah, yes, yes. It’s alright!” I said quickly. He came towards me and set in the vacant place next to mine.
“Nice to meet you!” he said smiling, this time, with his eyes also. I was able to understand that he really meant it. << So he’s the simple, trusting type>> I thought.
“Likewise...” “The lesson started! You’ll get acquainted during the break, please!” the teacher interrupted us.
“Yes, sir!” I said, and tried to pay attention to the teacher, but the only thing that I could think of was that guy…
No sooner had the bell chimed than the teacher left the classroom. Roi stood up and leaned against the desk:
“So, what was your name?” he asked with a grin. I started laughing and then I said:
“Dean Roy Hawking. Nice to meet you!” I answered, also grinning.
“Roy? Nice! Almost just like mine… can I call you like this?”
“Alright, but most people call me Dean. Then, can I call you King?” I said and started laughing.
“Stop teasing! I don’t like it…”
“Oh, look! He blushed!” I laughed again. Suddenly I remembered the previous night <>
“Stop it! My name is pronounced just like yours. I don’t like it otherwise… it reminds me of dead mom… she was French…”
“Sorry… I didn’t know. So your father is Norwegian?”
“No, he’s from northern Germany.”
“Oh, that’s the reason for the fair complexion. Did anyone ever tell you you’re beautiful?”
“Well, girls do tell me often that I’m handsome, but not beautiful. Why, are you gay or something?” he said grinning evilly.
“That might be, you never know!” I answered sarcastically. “So, do you have a girlfriend?”
Suddenly his expression changed: he seemed so sad that I was almost afraid he would start crying… <> I thought worriedly. To my surprise, he answered:
“Y… yeah, I do… or so I think…”
“D-did you decide on a club yet?” I changed the subject trying to look cheerful.
“No. can you recommend me one?” he answered quickly with thankful voice.
“Hmm… You can join my club. Do you like basketball?”
“Well… I don’t hate it. But I was expecting you to say something like the literature club!” he laughed. “You look like the intellectual type…” he continued laughing as if he had forgotten that a few seconds ago he thought it was the end of the world. <>
“Can’t I have best of both worlds?”
“Maybe… then I’ll join this club.”
“Ok then. Come with me after classes finish to see if you like it.”
“Mhm” he nodded.
After we had a talk I was able to concentrate on lessons. When classes finished we went to the Gym:
“Whait here. I have to go to get changed.” I went to the locker room and stripped of my black uniform and got into the more comfortable black t-shirt with a big red “10” on its back and black shorts. When I finished I headed for the gym. When I came in I saw Roi running towards my underclassmen and suddenly he jumped and caught the ball that was stuck in the hoop. I was amazed: the hoop was placed almost 3 meters high and the ace of the team (of course, me!) being the only one who could do such a jump. He gave the ball to the juniors and came towards me. When he reached me he was already breathing heavily.
“Roi, did you play basketball before?”
“No I didn’t. But I was on the jumping team for the track and field club.”
“I see. So, do you want to try out this game?”
“Why not… nothing to lose.”
“Then go to the club manager, get a form and sign up! We meet 3 times a week so don’t you dare skip!”
“Ok!” he said and started laughing again.
Three weeks have passed and we became closer and closer. He was a good basketball player and we made a deadly combination. I was happy – I had a new friend… or better said – I had found a best friend. But something was wrong… Every time he did something better than me – and that was quite often – I was feeling… jealous… more and more… In just a few weeks he took over my popularity. Everyone liked him. They liked me also… but they said about me that I was “cool and spicy” while Roi was “cool and kind”. So guess which one had more admirers… That proved that I was still a child… getting jealous over such a thing… Why couldn’t I just accept the thing that he was better than me? He was my best friend… why… why did I have to destroy it?

Cold Sky ~ part I ~

I can still recall it... the beautiful purplish winter sky. Where art thou, oh, most gorgeous Venus of mine? Or so I would have said if it was a Shakespearean drama. but this is just a normal love story under a cold, distant winter sky...
                                               Cold sky
“So cooooooold!” was the only thing I could think of that evening. I was walking as quickly as possible on the frozen sidewalk trying not to slip. “Don’t slip, don’t fall, walk quickly, reach warmness. Don’t slip, don’t fall... So cold!” I couldn’t think about anything else. Suddenly – “AAAAH” I looked in front of me: someone had just fallen. “Good! It wasn’t me” I laughed in my mind and head to the fallen person. I was near her and while looking at her I asked: “Are you alright...” But as I was asking she turned raised her head and looked at me. I was struck with awe while looking at her. Her pitch-black long wavy hair was contrasting with her pale-white skin, while her deep dark eyes were radiating liveliness and were giving her a playful aura. Her full lips were moving as if she was talking, but I was too enchanted with her beauty to hear what she was talking...
“Hey, you! Are you going to help me or just stand there watching me?” It was just so obvious that she wanted to seem annoyed... but, it wouldn’t have hurt to play a bit with her, right?
“I- I’m sorry!” I said with an apologetic voice and helped her stand up.
“It’s ok as long as you understand what you did wrong.”
“Yes ma’am!”
“ Wait! What do you mean ma’am? I’m only 17!”
“I’m sorry! But you’re still older than me so... ma’am!” I said playfully.
“Stop it! It couldn’t be that you’re that young! You look older than me... it gives me the creeps to be called ma’am by an older guy...”
“Too bad, but as I said, I’m younger. I’m still fifteen and I’m proud of it.”
“Ah, so you’re a toddler?” she said and started laughing.
“So it would seem, miss” I told her saying the word “miss” with a sarcastic tone.
“Did anyone told you you’re annoying for a teenager?!” she told me and started laughing again. I laughed too.
“Does his mean you won’t accompany me in that café? It’s so cold and you just wet your clothes with the snow. You should go dry... And I’ll also come because I’m in serious need of an <<3 in 1>>.” I told her with a grin.
“Annoying and clever. You really are a woman’s worst enemy!” she laughed again.
“Indeed, so it would seem.”
We walked in the café and found a nice table near the window. I looked around. A nice looking large and more important, warm room with a few tables and wood plucked walls and a big panel on the eastern wall which included only a few things: Coffe, Mocca, Espresso, 3 in 1 – Mild, Classic or Strong, Fruit tea, Black tea, Green tea, Apple/Chocolate pie and Muffins. A maid dressed waitress came: “May I take your order?”
“Yes” I said. “One <<3 in 1 classic>>. What would you like?” I asked the beautiful girl. “Take anything, it’s on me...”
“You don’t sound too happy when saying this.” noted the girl and raised an eyebrow. I almost started dozing off like when I first saw her but decided to stay focused: “Don’t worry. Take anything you would like.”
“Then, I’ll take on your kindness. One black tea with extra sugar please.”
“Very well” said the waitress and went to the next table.
“So, did your clothes started to dry?”
“We just came in! How could they?” she said and started laughing again.
“I see you like to laugh!” I told her and smiled.
“Well, it’s...” she spoke with stammer of embarrassment.
“Don’t worry, I find it cute.” I said and started to laugh myself.
“You know, cute isn’t the proper adjective for a 17 years old girl!”
“Can’t help it... if it’s true” I said with a smile on my face.
The waitress brought the <<3 in 1>> and the tea and then left. I put some sugar in my hot drink and drank half of it in one gulp. I rested my head on my left hand and looked up through the window.
“The sky is turning purple. It means that it’ pretty late...” I said unconsciously. “What were you doing here anyway?” I asked her.
“I was meeting someone, but they didn’t show up yet. I wonder what happened...”
“Maybe they also fell on the ice and now they are drying in a café” I said and started laughing.
“ He wouldn’t be that clumsy!”
“Yeah, sure! It’s someone you know so maybe he has gotten plagued with your clumsiness” I laughed again. “Wait! He?! She’s waiting a he?!” I thought. “Not that I care...”
“Ah! There he is! I got to go... Thanks for the tea. Bye!” she said no sooner than she took off.
“Wait!” I shouted. She turned around surprised.
“What?”
"W... What's your name?" I asked bashful. She smiled and said:
"Who's cute now? I'm Rose! You'd better remember it!" and she got out of the café. I watched her through the window as she went towards a well built man and hugged him. I rested my head on my left arm again while watching the sky:
"Such a beautiful dark purple winter night-sky... Beautiful... yet so cold and distant..."
